Happy Hanukkah

Thanks to The Protocols of the Yuppies of Zion for a fun Hanukkah link (and their thought-provoking blog).

Hanukkah is also known as the Feast of Dedication or Festival of Lights. For yet another flavor to this celebration, you may find the approach of Peeling a Pomegranate informative.

I confess that I know precious little about Judaism, and even had trouble deciding which spelling to use here (I settled on one of the Random House versions), but that’s the beauty of the Internet. It brings together many ways of seeing, if we simply open our eyes, especially in this month full of holidays from many traditions. December doesn’t have to be a month of mad consumerism. It can be a time of sharing, learning, and miracles, of transforming judgement into understanding. The more we know about each other, the less strange we feel to one another, and the less distant we are in our hearts and deepest desires. Such is the search for peace . . .

Shalom

  1. I work for a company that is much like a league of nations. And how nice it is for us to share our heritage. I just love it.

My family has never been much into their heritage, and when I asked my grandmother what her nationality was, she said “American” Enough for her. I have learned since that her parents came from England.

  2. I think a lot of people who emigrated to the US left their heritage behind, my family included. I’ve noticed a renewed interest in genealogy by people who want to reconstruct their family history.
