Thanks to the folks at A9.com, Inc. you can now explore my home town, San Diego, on your computer by virtual map. Cool, huh? See if your city is listed here, or search for a specific street address on the same page.
I found Sanfilippo’s, an Italian restaurant where I used to eat, by entering the street address at the main location search page, but had to scroll ever so little to actually see it. Click on the restaurant name above, find the bottom right “Go” button and scroll right once, then mouse over the bottom right two thumbnails, click on one for a larger pop-up view. Or check out the captured photo here. I’m testing to see if these captured photo links remain useable.
Here’s a captured image of the San Diego Zoo sign—in the rain.
The site is apparently still in a Beta version, so this may not be the end product, but I had fun exploring anyway.
Thanks to Social Patterns for the link.

Well, it appears the link to the photo of Sanfillipo’s is a temporary, expiring one, assigned by the server. I guess it’s just as well, they used too much basil for this oregano lover on their pizza. Loved their eggplant parmesean though.
Did you look for Luigi’s, near what used to be Belmont Park and the old roller coaster in Mission Beach? Voltero’s Pizza on Balboa Ave in Clairemont (or Kearney Mesa) was also good. I wonder if those places are still there….
Locally, Vince’s makes decent Italian, so long as you don’t mind taking it home to eat (take out only), and there’s always Filippi’s Pizza Grotto in Temecula (as well as some other locations in San Diego county).
Now that I think of it, Filippi’s in Temecula seems the same as their location in Pacific Beach did 35-years ago, they have consistent quality control over time.

1. I love that Fargo is one of the cities on the launch list. Nothing against Fargo, since it was kind enough to lend its name to a movie set mostly in Bemidji.
2. I checked out my sister’s neighborhood on the north side of Chicago. It’s actually sort of amazing how much detail is there.
3. The next cool thing to come along will be a map product that relates aerial photographs of the city to the ground level image. Maybe Google and A9 will make a deal.

Wicked! They don’t have Portland, Maine either, but they have Boston. They need to include a photo of the Citgo sign at Fenway Park, though.
