No, I did not mis-spell “sweater” in the title. We’re having a summery spring, with hot, dry Santa Ana conditions interspersed with normal spring weather, and it’s confusing our poor little seedlings.
I’m actually doing a tiny bit of gardening. Though I’m a plant — especially flower — lover, and I’ve hankered for some fresh garden produce for a long time, I’m shamefully lazy at doing anything about it. Any yard we’ve had that looked good in the past was entirely my spouse’s doing, except for a little weeding here and there on my part, and even now with my surge of interest in finally getting a real garden started here, I’m quite a bit lazier than he is. I’m much better at mental or creative, sedentary work than physical labor. But I’ve had my bursts of productive activity too, and I’ve gotten a little spring cleaning done indoors as well. Not enough to suit me just yet. There’s a lot of catching up to do around here. Thus my long absence, which has been partly rest periods due to the early lapses into summer. Hot weather tends to make me just want to lie down in a dark room with an icy drink of something and whine about the heat. When the thermometer rises above 80 degrees Fahrenheit, my brain even seems to go on vacation. Hopefully that helps explain the long absence from blogs — mine and yours.
How’s your spring going so far?
Had any summer yet?
Want some of mine?

I’m not planting gardens in back weeds, but considering a healthy poth plant on top of a stereo speaker in a living room no women would endure.

Hit 80 for the first time here today. A far cry from last year when there was still snow on the ground. (2 days earlier - April 16 - we had had about 10 inches). So this year’s been great. About all I can do here in the woods is watch the moss and ferns spread. All the places I’ve lived I’ve never had good soil and sun and finally decided not to fight nature by trying to garden under adverse conditions. I love vegetables and flowers other people have grown!

We’ve had alternately hot and cold days. But spring seems to be coming on pretty strong. I’ve planted pansies, onions, lettuce, and kale. And I’m getting very anxious to do some more planting. Because I’m not working, I have the time this year to work in the garden, and am really looking forward to it.
Have a happy Spring!

Whine… I love that word.
My mom lives just down the street from you so I’ve been kept apprised of your heat wave.
This is my second spring on the mountain and by all accounts this has been a *normal* spring. The date to watch up here, for a variety of reasons, is April 15th. It’s believed that after this date it’s safe to garden and bring plants from the indoors to the outdoors. We had a few teaser weeks when we felt a lull of safety, but several days before the 15th there were snow flurries. I’m a believer.
Last year spring came far too early and everything bloomed and then everything died a horrible death when a freak frost and a dip to 18 degrees swept over the mountain. I was out-of-town that particular Easter weekend and came home to a dead yard. It was awful.
This year has been normal – now, if only I was.
Another word I love is cranky.
Oh, and glad to see ya back!

I love gardening. I have my front yard in good shape, but the back yard…yikes!

Houston is living through the last of the mildness, I’m afraid. Here’s to A/C and iced tea.

Our spring is going quite well. We have lots of blooming trees, and the early bulbs that go with them.
I’ve planted a few cold weather crops (kale, onions, and lettuce) and am having moderate success.
More successful is the purchase of geraniums and begonias to hang in our tree by the deck. They don’t afford us food, but the smiles that come from seeing them hanging in our oversized maple tree are well worth the purchase price.
Our trees are blooming, and also my hay fever allergies, but they’re not so bad this year.
All in all, I’m really enjoying our spring weather here in SE Pennsylvania
Enjoy the good weather while you have it.

It has actually been cold here… it snowed last week. But my garden is gorgeous and I really can’t complain.

It has finally cooled down to something approaching normal. Goodness gracious, but it was hot! Just about the time I was ready to book a one-way trip to Alaska, the thermometer gave up and sank back 10 degrees or so. Two-shower-a-day weather is behind us again-for a while. Tomorrow we’re going wine tasting. I hope this good weather holds.
