Today left our region hot and dry with gusts of wind, movement and change allowing for a promise of cooling moisture in response to it, even the slightest hint of autumn-toward-winter chilling — as far as things ever chill here, though they cool quickly when the air is this dry. Dissipating smoke enhanced the golden autumn light, and a pink sunset lightened the colors of bougainvillea against hazy green foliage, under a hazy blue sky. My backyard at sunset today made a sight I wanted to memorize, or paint. Even a deadly fire leaves some beauty behind.

I’m glad we don’t have to worry about fires. I’d be a wreck. We’re due to high winds this weekend and the prospect of power outages makes me nervous. I hope you’re not in the path of any of those fires now.

I keep seeing the fires on the news and think of all your poor Southern Cal folks, breathing in the smoke and being in a fog of it, too. The lovely sunset sounds nice, though.

We’re well away from the actual fires so far this season, thank goodness. What we’ve been getting here is simply the weather and air quality effect. We had that one day of intense smoke, because the wind apparently blew directly here from the burn near Palm Springs. Today’s much clearer, and a little cooler.
